For a long time before leaving home I have been checking if the door is locked. Over a long period of time it became frustrating for me, it was impossible to deal with this problem. Therefore, I decided to do a research on the internet and see if any other people have the same burden as I do.
The research has shown that this constant checking habit is best known as Obsessive - Compulsive Disorder (OCD). Basically, OCD involves unwanted and disturbing thoughts, images or urges (obsessions) that intrude into a human's mind and cause a great deal of anxiety or discomfort, which the child/teen then tries to reduce by repetitive behaviours or mental acts (compulsions). According to the reasearch, there is a significant number of people who suffer the constant checking habit like I do. The fact that this problem is major motivates me to make other's and my daily life easier.
After I did a research, I started looking for the ways to solve this problem or at least lessen its impact on people. The first idea was to use a smart lock. It seemed like a good idea at the time, but then I discovered that previously mentioned solution is not as safe as a traditional door lock. In addition those smart locks are extremely expensive so not everyone could afford it. I spent so much time racking my brains ( with the purpose ) to find the way to check if the door is locked at any time. My intention was to create a product which is simple, universal and easy to use.
Contribution to community/society
ChecKEY is a product mostly suited for a particular group of people who suffer from OCD, but it does not mean that only they can use it. The key would let a person check if the door is locked at any time so that the user would be protected from unwanted disturbing thoughts or images.
There are two bright phosphorescent color/indicators on the key: GREEN and RED. Only one color can be seen at a time. This prenvents the user from confussion. If the RED indicator is visible - the door is locked, if the GREEN shows up - the door is unlocked. Using this key is a very simple and convenient process. By locking or unlocking the door, one part of the key spins 180 degrees and stop at the required position. Later the user can check if the door is locked or unlocked just by looking at the key.
What would you spend your prize on?
The prize would allow me to bring my project to life by 3D printing it. By doing so, I would be able to test the product in reality, change what is wrong and make some adjustments, consult engineers. Later I intend to make some more copies of the key and give them to the potential users to try them out and express their opinion based on their experience. If everything goes as planned, I would like to patent my invention, share it with companies, on the internet, social media and even try to produce a bigger quantity of they keys for a wider audience.
